DESCRIPTION
Installation version of Goodbye, Utopia. The nine-channel video installation Goodbye, Utopia is presented in a spatialized format. Nine LCD screens are suspended in midair, their images facing downward toward the floor. The backs of the frames are uniformly covered with black aluminum panels. The installation is accompanied by aluminum plates and mirrors, each mirror matching the scale of the LCD screens. Viewers can only see the moving images on the LCDs through the reflections in the mirrors placed on the floor; yet from no angle can they grasp the entirety of the work.
This installation-based presentation emphasizes a way of viewing history as partial and fragmented—what we recognize of history is never the whole, but always a section. At the same time, this mode of display produces a paradoxical semantic field where minimalism and complexity, collectivity and individuality, commonality and uniqueness coexist in tension.
