DESCRIPTION
The Borderman series reuses screens from VR headsets and incorporates eye footage either filmed by the artist or produced in 3D animation. The work explores the profound intervention of digital media in individual lived experience, offering a prophetic vision of a Frankensteinian future species. The eyes embedded within the screens command the viewer’s attention and self-awareness, performing the multiplicity of human emotions while exposing the frailty of Artificial Intelligence in its inability to fully emulate human affect and contingency. Submerged in a wash of red light, the eyes evoke the apocalyptic atmosphere of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), theatrically complicating the ambiguous boundaries between virtuality and reality.
Eight pairs of distinct eyes, drawn from undisclosed backgrounds and identities, gaze both at the center of the exhibition space and at one another through the screens of VR headsets. The screens emit fiery red light, leaving it uncertain whether this glow originates from the real or the virtual realm.
